How AI Swing Analysis Actually Works
Stroke Gained Team
Every golfer has been there — you hit a shot that feels perfect, then watch it slice into the trees. Or you shank one off the hosel and somehow it ends up pin-high. The disconnect between what your body does and what you think it does is one of the biggest challenges in golf.
That's exactly the problem AI swing analysis solves.
What Happens When You Upload a Swing
When you record a swing video in Stroke Gained, here's what happens behind the scenes:
Frame-by-frame pose estimation breaks your video into individual frames and maps 33 key body landmarks — wrists, elbows, shoulders, hips, knees, ankles. This creates a digital skeleton overlay of your entire swing motion.
The system then identifies the critical positions: address, takeaway, top of backswing, transition, impact, and follow-through. Each of these positions tells a story about your mechanics.
What the AI Sees That You Don't
A trained eye can spot a flying elbow or early extension. But AI analysis goes deeper:
- Angular velocity at each joint through the swing sequence
- Kinematic sequence — whether your hips, torso, arms, and club fire in the correct order
- Consistency patterns across multiple swings — not just one snapshot
- Micro-movements that happen in milliseconds at transition and impact
The AI doesn't just describe what it sees. It connects the dots between cause and effect. A slice isn't just "your clubface was open" — it traces back to grip pressure, shoulder alignment at address, and transition timing.
From Data to Drills
Raw data is useless without actionable feedback. That's why Stroke Gained's AI generates:
- Priority fixes — the one or two changes that will have the biggest impact
- Specific drills you can practice at the range or at home
- Progress tracking — how your key metrics change over time
- Comparisons to your previous swings, not to some idealized "perfect" swing
The goal isn't to make everyone swing the same way. It's to help you swing your way, more consistently.
Why This Matters for Coaches
If you're a golf coach, AI analysis doesn't replace you — it amplifies you. Instead of spending 20 minutes watching video frame by frame, you get an instant breakdown of your student's mechanics. You can focus your lesson time on teaching, not diagnosing.
Combined with launch monitor data from Rapsodo or TrackMan, you get the complete picture: what the body does (swing analysis) and what the ball does (launch data). That's the foundation for real, measurable improvement.
Getting Started
Upload your first swing video in the Stroke Gained app. All you need is a phone camera, a decent angle (down the line or face-on), and 3-4 swings. The AI handles the rest.
Your best round is waiting in the data.
